Then, look to see how many newsletters from individuals or brands you’ve received in the past week (for me it was around 20). After you have that number, look to see how many of those newsletters you’ve actually opened (for me it was 3). Lastly, think about how many of those newsletters you engaged with in some way (replied, shared, etc.), or which ones contained memorable content that you’ve added to your memory bank (for me it was 0).

Your niche is one of the biggest determining factors of your success in generating money. As a starting point, where possible write about something that interests you. If you enjoy hiking, for example, go with that. You could start off looking at REI for products and Zappos for outdoor footwear for inspiration. For movie fans, sites like http://www.redvdit.net/ and http://www.dvdbeaver.com/ are a good start. Take the latter; you can probably make something a lot prettier than DVDBeaver. Similarly, If electronics is your thing, check out wirecutter.com and rtings.com for inspiration, what are they doing well, and what can be improved upon.

If you can get more specific and the keyword still shows up in Google Autocomplete, Moz Keyword Explorer and other keyword tools… choose the SPECIFIC one.

Analyze the top results and learn your competition. The higher the DA (domain authority) and PA (page authority) the more competitive the keyword is. However you still want to click on the top results and browse the content to make sure you can creating an article/video that is better than whoever’s in the top results. That is really what “researching the competition” is all about.
The original PageRank formula was ranked out of 10 with 0 being the lowest and 10 being the highest. The MozBar DA and PA ranking factors are ranked out of 100, with 0 being the lowest and 100 being the highest. Either way you look at it, none of these factors are completely transparent or indicative of the current rank. They are simply estimations by “forecasters.”

If you take a close look at the search done for “daily goal setting” with SEOQuake being active, you’ll notice that I rank #1 for this search. However, where authority is somewhat skewed is that SEOQuake doesn’t recognize a whole lot of links for my site. In fact, only 200 total as opposed to Life Hack’s (#2 on the list) 134k links. That’s a fairly wide difference.
